Autism Awareness Project

The project was launched in March 2017 as a result of a number of families approaching Hope and Compassion facing the same struggles and challenges with their child and the within community.

The Autism team have been working with the local community facilitating Autism talks to raise awareness in Gurdwaras and places of worship, the team are now looking at organising further talks, workshops and training in the areas highlighted.

Taking direction from the community and listening to their needs, the team are facilitating a new initiative called ‘Spiritual Space’ for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability and their families to have a space where the child can be free to express his/her spirituality. A space for families to be comfortable and bring their children without judgement and criticism. H & C endeavors to make this a regular practice in all Gurdwaras and places of worships nationally and will be donating toolkit to facilitate these sessions. The kit will contain materials, instructions and a basic manual with a CD to help organise the sessions successfully.

A mother and fathers Autism group has been created for parents to share their journey with other parents. A space for parents to share knowledge, experience and good practice. Letting the parents lead these sessions and direction workshops are being organised in the area where parents feel they need advice, guidance and support.

The team are developing resources in different languages to help the community and older generations understand the struggles and obstacles faced by children and their families with an ‘invisible’ or ‘hidden Disability’.

Please contact us if you would like to organise a ‘Spiritual Time’ session at your place or worship or join the support groups available.
